I know how chaotic it can be to get the family all together to capture this season of your life. These moments of our lives with children are precious and always changing. Life can be incredibly busy, and I want to help share tips that I’ve picked up over the last 13 years of photographing for family’s and having my own family photographed. Here's 10 little pieces of advice that can help make the best session.

1. Dress for Success! Matching outfits? Skip it, go with complimentary colors but not matching sets! This also allows older kids to show their own personality. Most important remember, to try things on in advance and wear something you’re feeling confident in!

2. Bribery Works (For Kids and Adults Alike): This could be in the form of a treat at the end of the session, a special activity after the session or even cash for kiddos to pick their own form of a reward. While it is always a good idea to pack snacks with you for very young littles it’s not as ideal to pull them out during the session unless it is truly needed.

3. Strike a Pose… or Not: Let’s be honest, perfect poses have their purpose. Sometimes the best shots come when you’re just being yourselves. So, try to relax as the session begins. Go ahead and laugh, play, walk together or even tickle each other! We’ll capture the magic in those candid moments.

4. Sing Along! For families with little ones, try to think of those little cues or songs that your little one is already familiar with to help them feel comfortable and naturally trigger a smile.

4. Embrace the Chaos: Family photo sessions are a lot like life—beautifully messy! If the little ones decide to go rogue, don’t stress. As a pro with years of experience I have a plan of directing the session but we’ll go with the flow based on your goal photo list and adjust as needed based on the kids. Some of the best shots come from those unexpected moments. Time can be added to a session in the moment, if things are going well and you’d like to capture additional variety.

5. Bring Your A-Game (And by “A,” We Mean Attitude): A good attitude is the best accessory. If you’re having fun, it’ll show through the photos. Plus, it’s contagious—the kids and even the photographer will feed off your positive energy.

6. Have a Pre-Session Pep Talk: Let everyone know that the session is all about fun and being together. No pressure! Share with the little ones that the photographer is a friend and it’s ok to be a good listener for the photographer. You can also show them a photo of the photographer to them so that they may have an easier time with the quick connection.

8. Remember: It’s Just a Moment in Time: Don’t stress about perfection. Your family’s love and connection are what make the photos special. Years from now, you’ll treasure these memories, imperfections and all.

9. Post-Session Celebration: consider planning something fun afterward—a family dinner, ice cream, or a movie night at home. It gives everyone something to look forward to and keeps the good vibes going on the day of the shoot!

With these tips, your family will be ready for a photo session that's not just successful, but also memorable and full of laughter!
